American CEOs Support Citizenship Track for Illegal Immigrants

PRNewswire
November 19, 2006

Over 200 CEOs of American
businesses weighed in on the subject of illegal immigration as part of an
extensive survey on multicultural business issues conducted by Si Change
Consulting and "Chief Executive" magazine. The survey was conducted April 5
through April 17, 2006.

American CEOs fully endorse a process of legalization for the 11-12 million
illegal immigrants currently in the United States. Concurrently, these business
leaders propose strong border controls and immigration law enforcement for new entrants.

When asked to suggest the best approach to dealing with an estimated 11-12
million illegal immigrants in the United States, CEOs acknowledged America's
historical openness to immigrants from all over the world, as well as their
fundamental contributions to the American economy.

"The immigrants have become mainstream contributors to our economic wellbeing
through their participation in the workforce. These are not resources easily
replaced," stated one CEO.

Proposals to absorb illegal immigrants ranged from granting full amnesty to
those who register within a specified time period, to a more systematic approach
toward "earned" citizenship. Steps in this path would include learning English,
paying taxes and having a clean criminal record.

On the other end of the spectrum, a small number of CEOs proposed immediate
deportation without the possibility of amnesty, as well as a closing of borders.
Regardless of their position on the subject of illegal immigration, most CEOs
advocate the careful review of current laws and the development of an approach
that makes legal immigration less onerous.
